Broken South ca. 1492 DR

The Broken South is an island off the south coast of Windren Isle which was originally part of the mainland, but separated after a failed magical ritual that also destroyed the then capital of the Windren Magical Council. Capital of the Broken South is River's End ruled by Admiral Lenira Riverton. Politically the Broken South is its own independent nation that is part of the Windren Nation Alliance and has therefore sworn to abide by the laws and regulations of the Alliance Council. The nations coat of arms shows two masts with full sails.

The Broken South's navy and shipyards are the most sophisticated in the Windren Isles, which led to the nation being responsible for safeguarding portals and the waters surrounding the alliance. Agriculture is the islands second industrial focus, and since it has the most fertile land in the alliance it also supplies the mainland. Despite their navy and foods export the majority of the Broken South's trade is done through the Trade Leagues.

Given its captial's position as the first harbour ships from Faerûn land at, the Broken South also plays a critical role in external politics and therefore houses embassies from all other alliance members and many representatives from its eastern neighbours.

Geography

Central Mountain Range:

  • Running north to south, the mountains are rich in resources and host both the dwarven city of Sanderfell and the Lost Warriors Tribe of goliaths.
  • The mountains taper into cliffs at their northern edge, where the island was severed from the mainland during a planar catastrophe.

The Riverfields:

  • Lush, fertile lands fed by rivers descending from the mountains. This region sustains both Broken South and parts of Highwall with agriculture and freshwater.

Eastmountain and Westmountain:

  • Eastmountain is developed, hosting settlements like Sandarfell Town and the Broken Woods, a key supplier of lumber for shipbuilding.
  • Westmountain, remote and sparsely populated, serves as a connection point to the Wild Isles, with minor ports and fishing villages.

Forests and Groves:

  • Broken Woods: A vast forest used for shipbuilding lumber, with towns like Broken Woods Town nearby.
  • Oakbranches Grove: The largest druidic enclave on the island, hidden by natural and magical defenses, serves as a spiritual and ecological hub.

Political Structure

Admiralty Rule:

  • Broken South is governed by an Admiral-King/Queen, currently Admiral Lenira Riverton, a seasoned leader respected for her strength and diplomacy.
  • The Admiralty Board, composed of naval officers and key advisors, aids in governance and strategic planning.

Succession and Legacy:

  • Lenira’s heir, Joane Riverton, is favored by the public for her charisma but lacks her mother’s strategic experience. Her relationship with the Admiralty Board is mixed, with some members questioning her readiness to lead.

Local Governance:

  • Settlements are generally autonomous, led by mayors, guild leaders, or tribal chiefs, with military and naval garrisons ensuring law and order.
