Reeves sat in the tavern during the tournament, trying to relax despite the loud conversations about an explosion in town. Speculations ranged from drow attacks to beasts storming the gate, but Reeves dismissed them as mere rumors. However, his solitude was soon interrupted when his companions returned with news of potential mercenary work related to the explosion.

Seizing the opportunity for some profitable action, the group headed to the mines where the explosion had occurred. Upon arrival, they encountered a commanding officer who directed them to investigate the mine and report back, with the promise of hourly payment. The officer also mentioned that the mine should be empty but instructed them to rescue any survivors if found.

As they ventured deeper into the mine, an eerie silence surrounded them. They came across broken mine cart tracks and a cave filled with glowing rocks, suggesting increasing temperatures and unstable conditions. Opting to explore a different mineshaft, they stumbled upon a group of goblins, leading to an unexpected skirmish.

Reeves initially suggested a strategic retreat to regroup, but Whisper, ever impulsive, charged forward and took two arrows before hiding behind a rock. Rico, displaying his usual bravery, followed suit, putting himself in danger. Seeing no other option, Reeves joined the fray, sustaining injuries himself. After a draining fight, the goblins were defeated, and silence fell once more over the mines.

Exhausted but determined, the party continued their mission, uncertain of what awaited them deeper in the darkness.
