The party collected the town hall’s promised records on their shortlist of elven victims and relatives, which added little beyond confirming there was only one direct descendant among the names. They spent the evening keeping vigil at a targeted household. Their host began burning incense that, on inspection, seemed ordinary—until Koro, urged by Whisper to try a breath, abruptly lost consciousness, an uncommon reaction for an elf. With no magical cause detected, the group aired out the room and revived her. Learning that the incense had come from Anastia—the ancient elf met earlier who had offered “sight across the veil”—sharpened suspicions about her motives, and the party resolved not to use her tea or draught. Near the same hour pattern as prior murders, the banshee manifested; the group engaged and defeated it just as city guards prepared to breach the door. Though the threat was ended, the guard captain, unhappy to have “lost the race,” paid only the minimum owed and filed charges for insulting officials—citing Koro in the moment and an earlier incident in which Whisper repeated a crude remark about the local Moradin high priest—leaving the party with a formal black mark despite their success.

At first light the party went to an elven-run administrative office to contest the accusations and seek to clear their names, request reprimand for the captain’s conduct, and, if possible, recover the remainder of the pay they believe is due.
