AD&D Session 107 – Voices Beneath the Water

22nd of Misuthar, 835 PD

Continuing the evacuation from Daestok, the party and its refugees reached the vast underground lake where boats had been prepared for the next leg of their journey through the Underdark. Among those boarding alongside the drow guides was a heavily armoured red dragonborn, another traveller apparently joining the crossing.

There were not enough boats to carry the entire group at once, forcing the refugees to cross in two waves. With each journey expected to take roughly an hour, the first group pushed out onto the dark water.

Partway across, Bibi and Zefran began hearing voices from beneath the lake and seemed to recognise familiar faces in the depths. Both suddenly threw themselves overboard. Whisper immediately dove after Bibi, while the dragonborn leapt in after Zefran, and the two were hauled back towards the boats.

They did not return alone. Humanoid figures resembling people familiar to the party, including Marcus and Koro’s gardener, emerged with them, but the apparent rescuers quickly revealed themselves to be aquatic creatures using deceptive appearances. Once exposed, they proved little threat and were dispatched before the crossing continued.

After reaching the far shore, the party waited until the second group had crossed safely rather than pressing ahead without the refugees. Beyond the lake, a long staircase led upward to a junction of four possible routes. Each path was watched over by a statue, and the figures challenged the travellers with a logic puzzle intended to reveal the correct way forward.

After considerable deliberation, the party settled on one of the four passages and led the refugees onward, leaving the black waters behind and continuing their uncertain journey beneath the Empire.
